20 Hazelnut Recipes That Go Beyond Dessert (2024)

20 Hazelnut Recipes That Go Beyond Dessert (1)

We’ll admit, we’re nuts for nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts… we love them all. They add depth of flavor and pleasant crunch to everything from salads to desserts—think about it, what doesn’t benefit from a little sprinkle of toasty nuts on top? One of our favorites has got to be hazelnuts, and not just because they’re the main ingredient in Nutella (though that IS a big part of it). They’re rich and buttery with just a touch of earthy sweetness that adds intrigue to whatever you put them in. We’ve curated a list of 20 recipes featuring hazelnuts here—use them as inspiration, then grab a bag and toss them in everything.

When we say everything, we mean it. Hazelnuts are wonderful paired with chocolate, of course, so we’ve included our gluten-free brownies (like an adult version of cosmic brownies), our chocolate hazelnut thumbprints (with Nutella and hazelnut flour), our Mississippi mud pie, and our Nutella banana pudding. Speaking of chocolate and hazelnut, have you ever tried making your own Nutella? It’s surprisingly easy, and the resulting spread has a little added texture and crunch you’ll love.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking hazelnuts should only skew sweet—they’re wonderful in a variety of savory applications too. We’ve added hazelnuts to other sauces and spreads to great effect, like our extra-garlicky romesco, the hazelnut miso sauce on our grilled swordfish, the parsley-lemon-hazelnut sauce (sort of like a nutty gremolata) on our flattened chicken and grilled romaine, and our carrot top pesto. They’re also wonderful candied in our tomato salad, or combined with bread crumbs in our hazelnut crusted tilapia. Try swapping them into your favorite salads, seafood dishes, chocolate desserts, and more!
