What’s in an Old Fashioned Apple co*cktail?

A traditional Old Fashioned co*cktail is made by muddling sugar and bitters, mixing it with (bourbon) whiskey, and then adding citrus rind. To make this apple-infused fall version of the classic co*cktail, we are making a few changes. We are adding in apple cider and apple butter, plus finishing it off with a garnish of cinnamon to give it the final fall kick it needs.

Is an Old Fashioned better with simple syrup or sugar cube? ›

Use Rich Simple Syrup

The sugar cube is one Old Fashioned tradition that can definitely be skipped. While many recipes call for it, it offers no advantage over using a rich simple syrup and has several disadvantages. Most obviously, you have to find and buy sugar cubes and a muddler.

What is the best alcohol to make an Old Fashioned with? ›

With that said, bourbon is often the go-to whiskey choice for an Old Fashioned. The relatively heavy body of the mostly corn-based spirit creates structure within the co*cktail, and its natural sweetness helps counterbalance the more astringent elements of bitters.

Is an Old Fashioned better with whiskey or bourbon? ›

Bourbon or rye whiskey

Consequently, some traditionalists insist an Old-Fashioned should be made with rye, but bourbon is equally correct and the choice of whiskey should be entirely up to the personal taste of the drinker. Bourbon makes a mellow, slightly sweeter drink, while rye adds more spice and kick.

The classic recipe, according to most mixologists, calls for Brown Demerara sugar cubes. Sugar cubes are previously measured, allowing for consistent whiskey to bitters ratios. The Angostura aromatic bitters have a rich scent of fruits and spices and are a necessary component of any classic Old Fashioned co*cktail.

Can you use simple syrup instead of sugar for an Old Fashioned? ›

Place sugar cube or simple syrup in an Old Fashioned glass. I prefer simple sugar over a sugar cube to ensure that all the sugar is dissolved. Add two splashes of bitters and, if using a sugar cube, 1 teaspoon of water to dissolve the sugar.

What can I use instead of sugar in an Old Fashioned? ›

A favorite among home bartenders and bar professionals alike, maple syrup is an easy way to twist a classic co*cktail, such as an Old Fashioned or a Margarita, into a completely different drink with its distinct flavor profile.

Is Crown Royal good for Old Fashioned? ›

I focused my tasting on American whiskeys, stressing a balance between familiar bottles and less-famous ones that are well worth space on your shelf, though there are any number of fantastic rye-forward Canadian whiskeys that make great Old Fashioned co*cktails, such as Crown Royal and Alberta Premium.

What bitters are best in Old Fashioned? ›

I recommend a high-proof bourbon with bold flavor notes, so that its flavor will not be overpowered by the orange and bitters. Bitters: Angostura bitters are most commonly used in this co*cktail. I generally add about 3 to 4 shakes, but feel free to add as many as you prefer.

What is the best affordable bourbon for an Old Fashioned? ›

Evan Williams. For those seeking a balance of quality and affordability, Evan Williams Black Label delivers. This bourbon boasts a smooth and mellow profile, with a hint of caramel and a touch of oak.

How long should you stir an Old Fashioned for? ›

Mix the co*cktail: Place the bourbon, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass. Add the ice and stir with a bar spoon for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain the co*cktail: Strain the co*cktail into a rocks glass over one large ice cube, or cubed ice.

Did the original Old Fashioned have a cherry? ›

The only other ingredients the drink requires—bitters and sugar—work together to enhance the spirit with a subtle sweetness. Over the years, the co*cktail has evolved to sometimes include an orange slice, club soda and/or a cherry, but they're not traditional to the drink.

What does the drink Old Fashioned contain? ›

Made with just four ingredients—whiskey, sugar, Angostura bitters, and an optional (but recommended) orange peel or Luxardo cherry garnish—the Old Fashioned is up there with other co*cktail greats like the Manhattan, Negroni, and Sazerac.

What is the difference between traditional and Old Fashioned? ›

Traditional is something that has been done a certain way for a long time. People do it over and over. For example, it is traditional to put a Christmas tree in our homes during December. Old-fashioned is something that used to be done a long time ago, but people don't do it anymore. For example, it is old-fashioned to ...

What's in an Old Fashioned vs Manhattan? ›

Both co*cktails call for whisky and Angostura bitters, but the defining factor lies in their sweetening agents. The Old Fashioned opts for straightforward sugar or syrup, helping to soften the whisky. In contrast the Manhattan favours a sweet vermouth – adding fruity and caramel flavours into the mix.
