Learn How to Make Homemade Natural Lip Balm!

If you are looking for a homemade natural lip balm recipe, you will really like this one because it is so simple and easy for anyone to make.

Homemade Natural Lip Balm Recipe - Takes Only 5 MINUTES to Make! (1)I am one of those people whose lips stay chapped and dry no matter the season or weather.

This is really kind of frustrating because I have an oily face. My face is always greasy whether I apply cream/lotion or not.

Spring brings chapped lips from the wind, summer comes and so does the sun which causes my lips to dry out too.

Fall and winter set in, and so does the cold air, heat in the home which dries out the air and causes our lips to chap.

With chapped lips, it seems I never get a break. I was that person reaching for the tube of lip balm every five seconds just hoping for one second of relief.

I also was that person who had a tube of chapstick or lip balm stored in locations everywhere so I could always have one handy.

Sure, it was instant gratification but it never lasted. After just a few minutes my lips would feel dry and rough once more.

Moreover, the majority of the lip balms on the market contain toxic chemicals that do more harm than good.

This is why I decided to start making my own homemade lip balm, using all-natural ingredients and essential oils.

Before we go into how to make natural lip balm proper, let’s take a look at some of the downsides of commercial lip balms.

The Problem with Commercial Lip Balms

As I said before, most commercial lip balms contain harsh chemicals that are harmful to your body.

I really believe that I shouldn’t put anything that I can’t ingest internally on my skin NOT to talk about putting it on my lips. This is because whatever you put on your skin ends up in your bloodstream.

First of all, most commercial lip balms contain petrolatum, which is commonly used by manufacturers as a moisturizer.

The problem is that petrolatum also called petroleum jelly or mineral oil is NOT a moisturizer. It is a petroleum by-product that coats the skin, prevents it from breathing and thus causing dryness in the long run.

Another harmful ingredient you can find in lip balms are parabens, which are generally used as preservatives.

Parabens tend to mimic estrogen: hence they are endocrine disruptors and can lead to cancers.

If you must use a commercial lip balm, ensure that you choose one that is made with all natural organic ingredients. Read the label carefully to ensure that it doesn’t contain any synthetic or harmful chemical.

However, making your own homemade natural lip balm is super easy. It only takes 4 ingredients and 5 minutes.

*This recipe makes 3 ½ ounce containers of lip balm

Benefits of the Ingredients

  • Vitamin E is a moisturizing and healing carrier oil. It also has anti-aging properties and acts as a natural preservative.
  • Cocoa Butter adds bulk and makes your lip balm creamy so it “glides” on your lips. It is also a good natural moisturizer.
  • Beeswax keeps lip balm solid so it doesn’t melt and make a mess in your pocket or purse
  • Essential Oil adds scent, slight flavor, and more skin-healing properties

Instructions

  • Heat your beeswax until completely melted in a microwave safe container
  • Add in your cocoa butter and stir until dissolved (you might need to heat for a few seconds)
  • Next, add in the vitamin e oil and stir
  • After your mixture has cooled slightly, add in your essential oils
  • Pour into your container of choice. Tubes and small lip balm containers can be easily found at craft stores and online.

Not only is this a better healing solution for your chapped lips, but you can also make 3-4 jars for the price of 1 jar of store-bought balm.

Use regularly for best results.

Note: Herbs are also wonderful healing agents. If you are fighting a cold or upper respiratory infection I suggest adding Echinacea to your lip balm.

If you have cold sores on your lips, I suggest adding in Rosemary leaf, as it is a wound healing herb.

How to Infuse Herbs for Your Homemade Natural Lip Balm

What You Need

  • ½ cup of vitamin e oil
  • 1 teaspoon of herb

Instructions

Heat your herb in the vitamin e oil on low heat stirring occasionally for appx 2 hours. Strain the oil from the herbs and use 1 tablespoon of the herb infused vitamin e oil in place of the standard vitamin e. Store the remainder of the oil for later uses.

Instead of beeswax, I chose to use carnauba wax as a plant-based, beeswax alternative. Carnauba wax has the perfect consistency for a lip balm. It's neither too hard nor too soft. It's a natural wax derived from the leaves of the carnauba palm and is revered for its hypoallergenic and skin-soothing properties.

There's no one-size-fits-all answer as to how often you should reapply lip balm. But if you're trying to get into a routine, it may be helpful to shoot for four applications a day. “If you are using a non-irritating moisturizer, you can't really overdo it,” Lipner said.
