A Story of Resilience: Malta's University Rocket Team Overcomes Adversity
Imagine a group of passionate students, Malta's first university rocket team, on the brink of a historic moment. But disaster strikes! On the night before their European rocketry debut, their rocket motor explodes, leaving them with a daunting task.
But here's the twist: In just 48 hours, these determined students rebuilt their engine from scratch in Portugal, refusing to let a setback define their journey.
The University of Malta's Rocketry Team made history by becoming the first Maltese team to participate in the prestigious European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC). With 29 teams from across Europe competing, their goal was simple: launch their rocket to either 3 or 9 kilometers, depending on the category.
Led by co-founder Ryan Grech, the team spent six months meticulously crafting their student-made rocket. However, their journey took an unexpected turn when a static fire test revealed a catastrophic failure.
"The entire motor exploded, launching 250 meters into the air," Grech recalled. With their debut hanging in the balance, the team considered canceling their trip but chose to persevere.
And this is where their story gets truly inspiring. In a foreign country, with limited resources, the team split into three groups. Some scoured villages and Lisbon for parts, while others sought help from fellow competitors. The remaining members designed a new engine at their Airbnb.
Through their unwavering determination and a bit of luck, they built a new motor. But the challenges weren't over yet.
"The officials gave it a 10% chance of success for the static fire test," Grech shared. With limited time and resources, they conducted a static launch test, and the motor exceeded expectations.
As the team prepared for the test, they set up the motor on a concrete stand. When the launch began, the motor punched through 300kg of concrete, flying 600 meters away. Initially fearing another explosion, they soon realized the motor was intact, and it was the stand that failed.
Despite not having enough time or resources for a full launch, the team's resilience earned them an impressive eighth place out of 29 teams for the team award.
While other teams had trailers for their equipment, the Maltese team embarked on an hour-long walk to the military base's end, carrying their motor. But their determination remains unwavering.
"Next year, we're launching our rocket. We've learned from this experience," Grech said.
