Eleven years. That's how long the world has been searching for answers in the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370. Now, there's a renewed sense of hope.
On Wednesday, Malaysia's transport ministry announced that the deep-sea search for the missing Boeing 777 will recommence on December 30th. This decision revives the possibility of finally locating the aircraft, which vanished without a trace over a decade ago.
The plane disappeared from radar screens shortly after taking off on March 8, 2014. It was en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing, China, carrying 239 people, primarily Chinese nationals. Satellite data indicates the plane veered off course, heading south towards the remote southern Indian Ocean, where it is presumed to have crashed.
The transport ministry revealed that the U.S.-based marine robotics company, Ocean Infinity, will conduct intermittent searches for a total of 55 days, focusing on areas believed to have the highest probability of containing the wreckage. This marks a significant commitment by the Malaysian government to provide closure to the families affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
In March, the Malaysian government approved a 'no-find, no-fee' contract with Ocean Infinity. This means the company will only be paid $70 million if they successfully locate the wreckage. The search will cover a new area of 15,000 square kilometers (approximately 5,800 square miles) in the ocean. The previous search was halted in April due to adverse weather conditions.
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite an extensive, multinational search effort, no significant clues were found. While debris did wash ashore on the east African coast and various Indian Ocean islands, the main wreckage remains elusive. A private search conducted by Ocean Infinity in 2018 also yielded no results.
And this is the part most people miss... The ongoing search highlights the complex challenges of deep-sea exploration and the emotional toll on the families involved. The fact that such a large aircraft could disappear without a trace is a stark reminder of the mysteries that still exist in our world.
