Mickey: The Story of a Mouse intends (or does it?) to take the audience on a journey to trace the famous mouse from creation to now. I absolutely love Disney World and Mickey so this was a must watch for me any way you slice it. I'm a huge film history buff and seeing all of this old archive footage of Walt during his early days and seeing different clips of the first Mickey shorts is really cool. Unfortunately, this documentary doesn't go very deep into its subject. It's very slight and you probably will only learn a thing or two in this hour and a half film. This is good and all but if you haven't seen 'The Goof Who Sat by the Door' from Black American Network, then you're missing out on one of the greatest Disney documentaries of all time.
'Mickey: The Story of a Mouse' gives some raw insight into the most recognizable icon in history.
When it comes to Disney documentaries about themselves, the fear is that they will be sanitized revisionist films that aren't as in-depth as they should be. To my surprise, and maybe this is in part to the recent CEO change (spoke too soon, lol), this documentary gets into some truly dark moments in Mickey's pop culture.

Typical white-washed and fluffy 'official Disney documentary' fare. However, props for touching (although only just barely) on some of Mickey's more controversial history, and for acknowledging that the company has been too sh*t-scared to do anything interesting with this "icon" since the 1950s. A decent over-view of Mickey's history, and well made... but I learned very little here I didn't already know.
Also props to Disney for allowing the commission of a brand-new traditionally animated Mickey cartoon for this… even if it is far too short at only one-minute long. -

I was going to lead off this review with the pithy comment, "In the next episode of No Objectivity Theater, it's the Disney+ documentary Mickey: The Story of a Mouse". I was going to say that, but now I can't (and yet, I managed to anyway... huh....) because this very self-serving and self-aggrandizing documentary actually spends some time frowning at Disney's past... in the last twenty minutes of the movie anyway. Before that, the producers of this doc had to be rushed to the hospital for breaking their arms patting themselves on the back.

Many years ago, my son came face to face with a Mickey Mouse plushie from our local Walmart and immediately made a spiritual pact with it. So, I guess it wasn’t all that surprising when he proclaimed today that he had watched this Mickey documentary of his own accord and now wanted to watch it as a family. Personally, I felt I’ve seen enough about Walt’s life that this wasn’t going to be a revelatory 90 minutes, but I’ll take it over Lyle Lyle Motherf*cking Crocodile.
Yes, it glorifies Mickey like he is our Lord and Savior for at least 85% of the runtime. But I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t shy away from times Mickey and Disney didn’t…

A surprisingly thorough documentary by Disney standards! Seeing the process behind animation and learning more about it was very interesting, and it was great to see new hand-drawn animation. It also actually touched upon Mickey’s involvement in war propoganda, past racist cartoons (and was actually critical of Walt Disney about it), copyright drama and more, which was pretty big for a Disney-produced documentary. It’s easy to be cynical about Disney as a company, and rightfully so in a lot of cases, and of Mickey’s status as a corporate symbol (which this actually touched upon as well), but I like to think there’s still some magic and innocence in the funky lil’ guy.
