My household is already fans of sloppy joes (out of a can) so I thought I'd mix it up with this recipe for a guys night at our house, and it was a huge hit. Some liked the onions on top, some wanted them mixed in, I found it just about as easy as pouring it out of a can, so the prep wasn't bad at all. Not everyone is good with spicy foods, but even for those who can't handle much kick, they found it good, but not overwhelming. The leftovers (not alot of them) were gone the very next day, and as I heard, reheated very well. This is now the preferred sloppy joes recipe in our house.

I really enjoyed this recipe. I didn't have any green pepper, so I had to make it without it but it still came out very tasty. Next time I make I will make sure I have the green pepper because that will make it even better I'm sure.

Really good and super easy. I would even use ground turkey. Just the right amount of spice. I just used yellow onion instead of the sweet onion and red pepper because I didn't have any green pepper on hand. Delish. Even my picky teen ate the pepper which she usually picks out (of course she also put shredded cheddar on the open-faced sandwich). The coleslaw was a nice side dish.

Big hit with the hubby! (and of course me too). Got this recipe in my email and after a few days I decided why not make it and give it a shot. I subbed 93/7 ground turkey for the beef and it still tasted great. My hubby isn't huge on onions, so he skipped them but I liked them on it. Paired with some sweet potato fries and a simple green veg and we had a complete and yummy meal, with plenty of leftovers for lunch the next day.

Made this last night when the recipe popped up on the daily - sounded soooooo good - the mixture was hot and smoky from the Chipotle, but had no real depth of flavor - I found some traditional Sloppy Joe recipes for the leftovers tonight and really enjoyed - added about a tbs vinegar, about 1tbs brown sugar and 1 tsp worcestershire - since I had origianlly doubled the recipe and we had already eaten it last night, - only 2 of us - these measurements worked out fine - for us, it created a contrast and depth of flavor the original lacked.

I remade this dish tonight but swapped the Lean Ground Beef with Lean Ground Turkey. I will never buy sloppy joe mix in a can again! I paired it with a Caramelized Onion and Poppy Seed Cole Slaw. The smokey chipotle flavor paired well with the savory sweet slaw!

Yummy and very easy to make. We like spicy so I added an extra pepper - but be careful because it did have a burn. Didn't add the green pepper because I didn't have one - didn't miss it. Also added a "blob" of grape jelly to add a touch of sweet. Gotta have the onions - they make the dish! Will make this again!

This was very easy to pull together and I loved the addition of the chili in adobo which imparted a wonderful smoky/spicy element to the dish. Instead of the hamburger roll, I used a whole wheat english muffin which contained 8 grams of fiber. It was a nice hearty and healthy alternative to the hamburger roll, which can be overwhelmed by the meat mixture, in my opinion. Plus it boosted the nutrient level! This will be a go to recipe.

This was so good that my boyfriend went back for seconds. I used venison that I had in the freezer in place of sirloin & served with the recommended coleslaw, (also delicious), and a kosher dill pickle. My only complaint is that I burned the onion a little at medium high heat. I would make this again for an easy weeknight meal but wouldn't necessarily serve it to guests.

I made this with ground turkey instead of ground sirloin. My husband and I agreed it was very good! We topped with a basic guacamole, lettuce & tomato. We had a bunch of the onion leftover at the end, so probably only need 1.5 cups.

Wow, I'm suprised by how spicy this was using just one chipotle pepper! I love spicy food, but I actually had to add additional tomato sauce (and apple cider vinegar) to reduce the heat for my husband and me. He said it was good otherwise, but asked that I leave out the chile next time. Maybe I got an especially spicy can of chipotle in adobe? Our mouths were burning through dinner! Anyway, I don't see this as a good recipe for kids.

Added chopped garlic to the beef and an additional teaspoon of adobo sauce. Plated open-face on toasted kaiser rolls halves (because that's what we had on hand). The sweet onions "made up for" the lack of sugars (ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, bbq sauce, etc) we might expect in a more traditional sloppy joe recipe. Served with the recommended coleslaw. Very good.

Not a green pepper fan so I leave those out, but like someone else said don't forget the sweet onions. Pairs well with most coleslaw, especially nice with sweeter ones to tame the heat.

I made these tonight and they were sooooo good! They even topped my childhood memories of loving sloppy joe's. Definitely do not skip the onions! They are super easy to make and their sweetness plays wonderfully off of the smokiness of the chipotle. They key to getting them right using just cooking spray is to make sure you use a small skillet and keep them covered while cooking. The skillet should be small enough that when you first put the onions in, they are almost overflowing, but as they soften up you will see that they fit nicely. Also, make sure you use kosher salt as that is also key to the flavor. I served these with the goat cheese potato salad, also featured in the April edition and loved the play of tanginess vs. the smokiness of the joe's!

O M G these were FABULOUS! Since you only use one chili out of the can, you can make several batches of these. I put the rest of the chilis in the freezer for later use. One wasn't too spicy at first, but heated up for lunch today they were sort of spicy, so watch out for that if you intend to have these as left overs. They were super easy to make and MUCH better than regular sloppy joes. I may just retire that recipe and use this one from now on!! I served them with cole slaw and chili fries.

I did not rate this recipe 5 stars; the drop down menu would not go past that option. I'd give it 4. The outcome was great, but you need to cook the onions more in a light butter spread, not just spray. Also, adding a bit more chipotle sauce adds much needed flavor. Definitely drain the meat/peppers before adding the paste etc. as instructed so it's not so greasy. Forget the cole slaw in the magazine...it's terribly bland. I baked a few french fries -- it was a better side than the slaw.

I don't understand the other reviewers who said this didn't have much flavor. My only deviation from the recipe was to use regular tomato sauce instead of low-salt and to mix in the carmelized onions when the sauce was simmering. It was bold and delicious - far better than the stuff in the can and just as easy. For the cook wondering what to do with the leftover chipotles - I freeze them in an icecube tray (one per compartment with some sauce), then transfer to a freezer bag. They keep forever.

This has lots of potential. I added lots of garlic, doubled the cumin, increased the salt a little, and used at least double the chipotle (didn't measure, just spooned the pureed stuff into the pan). In the end, it was well-seasoned but not great. I ran out of time and gave up messing with it, but I think all it needed was more tomato sauce. Next time I'll add an extra can. Served with baked chips & coleslaw. Will definitely make it again.

It's funny that most people have chosen three to five stars for this recipe, but yet they go on to describe how they have to change it quite a bit. The same was true with me. The recipe as is, is extremely bland. I added lots of garlic, salt, mustard, and ketchup in order to increase the flavor. And I cooked it at a high heat at the end to thicken the mixture. After all that, the recipe was great! =)
